Humblebrag like a pro (or how to flaunt your achievements without showing off)

The majority of recruiters and hiring managers will spend a maximum of 6-8 seconds looking at a CV. That can be frustrating, especially after you have put a lot of work into it.

But there is hope!

If your CV is over 10 years old, you will most probably have used at least one of the following – interpersonal skills, proficient in Word, team-player and results-driven.

Would you expect to be taken seriously if you weren’t a hard worker or able to use Word? These skills and attributes are such an accepted part of our working culture now that they’ve become meaningless. So, if you have them in your CV, delete them. Now!

CV culture has shifted in recent years and it is now about delivery and not description. CVs used to be glorified job descriptions. Now they are about the results that you have delivered for the business.

Make your bullet points achievement-focused.

For example, think about using words such as:

  • Achieved
  • Improved
  • Increased
  • Delivered

These catch a recruiter’s attention because they not only demonstrate what you have done with a consequent result for the business, but also, and perhaps more importantly, what you can offer a new employer. They show tangible results that translate into future achievements and success.
