It’s your CV, but it’s not for you

Writing a CV can be a challenging process. Summarising what you have done and your achievements – you are including achievements, aren’t you? – into a two-page document is difficult.

But it’s important and sometimes helpful to keep in mind that it may be ‘your’ CV, but it isn’t ‘for’ you.

A CV is a marketing tool and you are the product.

You are writing your CV for benefit of the recruiter, hiring manager or whoever is going to give you the interview for the job you want.

Keep it relevant and be concise
It’s so easy to list all your skills and experience from that big project from 10 years ago which was then so important for you to the time that you interned at that big accountancy firm. But remember a CV is a shop window. It’s vital to keep to the point and keep it relevant to the target role.

And how do you keep it relevant? Tailor your CV to the role. By targeting your CV, it then becomes much more relevant to its intended audience, saving them time from having to wade through stuff they don’t need and making their life much easier. Everybody wins!
