Sometimes you just need a break

I’m going on holiday later this week and I’m really looking forward to it.

Whether you’re a doctor, baker, HR manager, coach or even a lowly CV writer, downtime is vital to not only relax and not think about work and deadlines, but also to just be.

‘Just be what?’ you may ask.

Whatever works for you.

You don’t have to ‘do’ anything or go anywhere. You might like reading in a quiet corner. Or maybe action is what you love and jet skiing is what floats your boat. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t have to be any one thing.

And most importantly, you don’t have to be or do anything that doesn’t spark joy for you.

My happy place is wandering around in a new city, purposelessly walking, and then inevitably bumping into a new coffee place, restaurant or local bar on the way. Trying out a new type of food, walking around listening to music and creating my own soundtrack for the experience.

There is an Italian expression ‘Dolce far niente‘ – the sweetness of doing nothing – that encapsulates the idea perfectly.

It’s easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of work, but sometimes you just need a break.

Be kind to yourself and give yourself permission to enjoy your time off.

Sometimes you just need a break to relax, recharge and perhaps enjoy a new perspective.

And so for the next few days, that is where you’ll find me, wandering around a new city, sweetly doing nothing.
