I can’t remember how many times I’ve heard the phrases: “I hate doing my CV” or “I’d love to leave my job, but I just can’t face doing my CV.” And, I have to confess that, once upon a time, I was one of those people. But…
Is the pain of writing your CV greater than losing the job you were born to have?
YES, is the answer for most people, but why is it a thing we dread or avoid doing?
Based on my experience, it comes down to three things:
- Not knowing how to do it well
- The fear of being judged
- Taking the time to do it
Very few of us are taught CV writing at school or university, and even if we are shown the basics, that doesn’t mean we really know what to write as it all seems to be a bit of a mystery. Plus, it can feel like the weight of our future fulfilment and happiness is riding on that two page document. No pressure!
There’s always a risk and the fear of being rejected and like it or not, that’s the reality of life, but most people focus on what could go wrong, as opposed to what could go right. They focus on how hard (they think) it is, not on what the end result will get them.
Stephen Covey said ‘Begin with the end in mind’ and if we do that and focus on the end result – namely, a finished CV that we are proud of and one that will get you that job you want – then the process gets easier.
Writing a CV is like many things in life. We need to overcome the fear, be confident in what we want and why we want it. And then, take action, however small that might initially be.
Take some to think about it. If you haven’t written your CV yet, what’s the real problem?
- Are you afraid that you won’t get the job and be rejected?
- Are you afraid that you will get the job and everything will change, and on reflection, you’re actually quite happy with the status quo?
- Are you telling yourself that you have no time to do your CV? And if so, what’s stopping you making time for something that could potentially transform your life for the better?
And if after all that, you still don’t want to write your CV – you know what’s coming now, don’t you? – then send me an email and I can write it for you!
